ABOUT
BRIEF BACKGROUND:
This centre will always give tribute to Mama Josephine Bhakita who was kicked out of her matrimonial home after giving birth to a disabled son. Ms. Bakhita was forced to leave her home, treated as an outcast Ms. Bakhita was determined to fight for her and her son’s social justice. Bringing together fellow parents whose children also had physical and or mental challenges Ms. Bakhita began to establish what is now today the Amani Centre. |
Located in Mogoro, Tanzania, the Amani Centre is s a non-profit organization that educates and empowers mentally and physically challenged children and youth.
The Director of the Centre is Father Beatus Sewando, the Roman Catholic Church runs the Centre, however the Centre is open to all no matter what their religion or faith is. It is open to anyone who would like to volunteer, donate or sponsor. The center receives no aid from the government for these children or their families, and the cultural stigmatism around disabled people in this part of the world is that the mother is either cursed or the child has been cursed by God so many are abandon, neglected or abused. The Amani Centre is a safe haven in many ways for these kids and their families, any sort of awareness that can be generated about the Centre will help. Although Amani started out as just a small group of mothers meeting under a tree, the Amani centre has grown phenomenally. Amani is now located in three different villages around Tanzania: Chamvino, Mvomero and Mikese. Chamwino, Morogoro. Chamwino, being the first of the centres, is the largest and most central centre. This is where the majority of Amani administration is based. The Amani Hostel, the Eco-tourism office, the Physiotherapy department, the awareness group and the Amani café are all based in Chamwino along with the day care centre. We also have our own garden just outside town where we farm vegetables and maize. |
MIKESE CENTRE
Mikese is part of Amani and is a centre and farm for the youth of the community. The Mikese is a farm with over 60 acres of crops, the farm consists of chickens, goats and bees; the crops consist of maize, mango trees, orange trees, lemon tress, sunflower, cow peas, pumpkin, and white beans. The crops provide food for the Amani Centre as well as the famine prone families around the Centre.

Mvomero
Mvomero is located less than two hours away from the Amani centre, Morogoro and is reachable by public transport. It is a self-sustaining centre, which runs educational activities to stimulate the children. Along with the running of the farm, a nursery school and tailoring classes have been set up. The idea is to teach the children essential life skills to enable to become more independent in everyday life. The hope is to build a special school for deaf and blind but would also house a hostel similar to the Amani Hostel in Chamvino. At Mvomero we keep milking goats and pigs and we farm maize, rice and mango.
MISSION STATEMENT
The Amani Centre is committed to making a positive impact on both the physically and mentally challenged children’s lives and the community outside of the centre, through the support of programs and initiatives concentrating on health care, education and raising awareness.
